Robert Innes Hopkins

Designer Robert Innes Hopkins made his Royal Opera House debut in 2011 on the world premiere of Heart of Darkness, directed by Edward Dick in the Linbury Studio Theatre and nominated for the 2012 South Bank Award for Best Opera Production, and has since returned with Welsh National Opera’s world premiere production of In Parenthesis, directed by David Pountney and performed at the Royal Opera House.

Innes Hopkins works widely in theatre and opera. His many collaborations with Pountney include Saul and David (Royal Danish Theatre), Prince Igor (Zürich), Kommilitonen! (Royal Academy of Music, world premiere), Die Soldaten (Lincoln Center Festival and Ruhr Triennale, winner of 2007 Opernwelt Set Design of the Year), Carmen(Bolshoi Theatre), Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci (Deutsche Oper Berlin) and Der Ring des Nibelungen (Lyric Opera of Chicago). His other opera credits include Maometto IIand The Cunning Little Vixen (Garsington Opera), Nabucco (De Vlaamse Opera), Tristan und Isolde (La Fenice, Venice, and Oslo), Wozzeck (Santa Fe Opera), The Elixir of Love(WNO and Opera North) and Betrothal in a Monastery (Glyndebourne Festival).

His awards in theatre include the 2007 TMA Designer of the Year for Promises Promises(Sheffield Crucible) and the 1996 Critics’ Circle Designer of the Year for The Comedy of Errors (Royal Shakespeare Company) and The Weavers (Gate Theatre). His other credits include The Crucible (Bristol Old Vic), Oppenheimer (RSC and West End), The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and King Lear (Chichester Festival), Neville’s Island (Chichester Festival and West End), Other Desert Cities (Old Vic) and A Doll’s House (National Theatre of Scotland).
