Ania Levy

Ania Levy is a performance designer based in London. Her process is driven by a love for rigorous research and collaborative work. A vivid imagination and strong design instinct helps her to draw inspiration across mediums; music is particularly key to her practice. Ania Levy believes the sharing of spaces and stories to be fundamental in building communities and looks to create work that puts its audience first. She strives to craft spaces that tell a story across the senses and form an emotional connection with her audience, never taking their presence for granted.

Having studied her foundation at Kingston School of Art, Ania Levy graduated from her BA at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with 1st class honours in 2022, where she was awarded the Ashley Family Foundation Award.

Drunken Baker

by Barney Farmer and Dave Windass, LAMDA 2022.

A speculative performance for a proscenium arch theatre, directed by Joe Warwick, designed by Ania Levy.

Drunken Baker is a piece of new writing devised from the
Viz comic strip ‘Drunken Bakers’, exploring the slow decline of an independent bakery in a northern town. This absurdist staging tells the story of two men, drunk and alone in a world of their own creation, absolutely powerless to escape it.
The effects of inertia, alcoholism and neglect on both the bakers and their craft took shape in a landscape of flour that falls and settles every day, burying with it lost possessions, memories and even the men themselves.

The Bare Chested Adventurer

by Holly Muller, RWCMD 2021

A speculative site-specific performance in promenade at an abandoned farmhouse in Penarth.

This performance explored the relationship between a father and son choosing to escape an endless cycle of drugs and partying. When designing this project Ania Levy set herself the principle that the design should collaborate with the space, rather than express itself ‘over’ the space. Conscious of the environmental impact of her work, the only element that altered the architecture of the space was a ramp onto the beach, increasing the accessibility
of the performance.

As the two decide to choose to end this cycle of self- destructive escapism, a flock of pigeons scatter from the roof of the abandoned house as a revelation. Smoking their final spliff, the performance concludes with a wave of water cascading down the walls of the house, cleansing away thick layers of graffiti, to reveal a fresh start.

Abigail’s Party

by Mike Leigh, The Caird Studio, RWCMD, December 2021

Costume designs and renders of Tony, Angela, Susan, Beverly and Laurence. These were made by altering 70s magazine adverts in Photoshop, as though they were torn from one of Beverly’s magazines. Original source material shown in small.

This performance used the advantages of an intimate playing space with scents that created the atmosphere of the dinnner party. Stage management prepared the set for guests before each performance, wiping down surfaces and hoovering with Shake n’ Vac allowed for a subtly nostalgic experience for audience members on entering the space.
