In a year that the theatre community has been devastated by the pandemic, starting out in the industry at such extraordinary times has never been more challenging. With the uncertain and ever changing situation and precarious nature of theatre programming right now we cautiously wait for the industry to get back on its feet. Rather than hibernation we are however committed to supporting young designers more than ever.

In a response to this unprecedented year we will be offering 12 bursaries to 12 brilliant young designers from the graduating classes 2020 and 2021. Each recipient will receive £4000 and a placement alongside an established designer to gain first hand experience of the production process.

This year submissions and judging will take place online as we are still adhering to Covid restrictions throughout the summer. Being online this year, we hope encourages graduates from all over the country to apply, without the burden of travel costs and physical portfolios. We hope that in a year that has been devastating for many that this support can provide some light at the end of the tunnel.

The Linbury Prize for Stage Design is funded entirely by The Linbury Trust, a charitable trust founded in 1973 by Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover KG (John Sainsbury) and his wife Anya, Lady Anya Sainsbury, CBE, the former ballerina Anya Linden. The name ‘Linbury’ is thus derived from the names Linden and Sainsbury.

THE LINBURY PRIZE FOR STAGE DESIGN 2021

“It made me aware of how important it is to be part of a creative community, to support others and help them to develop their skills and to shine. Winning the Linbury has definitely been a career‑changing experience. And now I feel I have the responsibility to return that favour to the audience by trying my best to raise standards in theatre design.”

“As a Linbury Prize finalist in 2015, I have seen how the Linbury competition is not just an invaluable platform for finalists, but also an incredible opportunity to meet fellow designers from across the UK. I have come out of this experience with a deep admiration for my peers and the diversity of talent in this country.”
