The Linbury Prize strives to give emerging designers the best possible start to a sustainable career in stage design.
For this year's cycle, twelve Prize Recipients will be awarded a bursary prize and a design placement with an established industry partner.
In addition, Prize Recipients will take part in an exhibition at the National Theatre in November 2023 – an unparalleled opportunity for designers to showcase their work before the public and industry wide professionals.
Submissions and judging will initially take place online, with shortlisted candidates subsequently invited to in-person interviews.
The Linbury Prize for Stage Design is funded entirely by The Linbury Trust, a charitable trust founded in 1973 by Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover KG (John Sainsbury) and his wife Anya, Lady Anya Sainsbury, CBE, the former ballerina Anya Linden. The name ‘Linbury’ is thus derived from the names Linden and Sainsbury.
THE LINBURY PRIZE FOR STAGE DESIGN 2023
“It made me aware of how important it is to be part of a creative community, to support others and help them to develop their skills and to shine. Winning the Linbury has definitely been a career‑changing experience. And now I feel I have the responsibility to return that favour to the audience by trying my best to raise standards in theatre design.”

We are offering in-person mentoring sessions on the 13th & 14th July at the National Theatre. This is an opportunity to discuss work that you might consider sharing at the submission stage.
Each attendee will have 10 / 15 minutes (per mentor) to talk through their portfolio with a variety of industry wide professionals. You will receive feedback on the clarity and quality of your presentation. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your interview and portfolio technique in a supportive environment.
These are free to attend, although places are limited. To book your place, please email linburyprize@nationaltheatre.org.uk by the
5th July. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.
